Luminaries 2026 Impact Statement
Diane Yu set out to fix the most confusing and expensive financial transaction most families will ever take on: the mortgage. It still runs on 90s tech, with jargon-filled PDFs, thick paperwork, and underwriter questions that trip up even prepared buyers. An immigrant engineer from China who co-founded FreeWheel (acquired by Comcast for $400 million), she built Tidalwave, an agentic AI mortgage platform whose agents run the process end-to-end, reasoning over income, assets, employment data, and underwriting rules. In 18 months Tidalwave has integrated with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, powers loans for D.R. Horton, the country's largest homebuilder, plus NEXA Mortgage, and others. By year-end it is on track to touch 200,000 loans in a market projected at $2.2 trillion
