A new award has been created to honor a chapter of the Financial Planning Association each year for its commitment to providing pro bono planning.

According to the FPA, the Power of Financial Planning Award is intended to recognize such work that honors the spirit of FPA's primary aim: "To elevate the profession that transforms lives through the power of financial planning."

Since 2011, the FPA says, the Foundation for Financial Planning has partnered with it and its nationwide network of chapters to help Americans in need find FPA volunteers who can help them improve their finances. The new award will recognize FPA chapters that go above and beyond in providing the underserved with free financial planning advice.

"FPA chapters across the country partner with nonprofits to serve some of the most financially vulnerable members of our society — victims of natural disaster, wounded veterans, domestic violence survivors, people with cancer, and many more," Jon Dauphiné, CEO of the Foundation for Financial Planning, said in a statement.

Dauphiné added, "We look forward to showcasing this exceptional work and highlighting the meaningful impact of pro bono — not only to the client, but also to the volunteer and the profession as a whole."

FPA chapters that want to learn more about the award and the nomination process and eligibility criteria will find information here. Nominations for FPA chapters must be submitted by July 12, and the Power of Financial Planning Award Selection Committee, consisting of FPA and FFP representatives, will determine the winner.

The winning chapter will be announced this summer. Presentation of the award will take place at the 2019 FPA Annual Conference, Oct. 16–18, in Minneapolis.
