Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company is moving ahead with efforts to add a 310,000-square-foot building on the Boston waterfront, near the Seaport World Trade Center.

The Springfield, Massachusetts-based insurer says it will be keeping its headquarters in Springfield, but that it plans to consolidate some facilities in other parts of the country. The realignment could lead to MassMutual bringing about 2,000 jobs to Boston.

MassMutual now has about 1,200 employees in Massachusetts.

The Fallon Company, a Boston-based real estate developer, and Elkus Manfredi Architects, a Boston-based architectural firm, have helped MassMutual design a building that would include space for shops and restaurants on the ground floor, and a public, 5,900-square-foot outdoor plaza facing a marina.

The tower itself could have landscaped terraces on the 13th floor and on the roof.
