NU Online News Service, July 25, 10:39 a.m. – Cancer and complications from pregnancy were the leading causes of long-term disability claims for U.S. workers in 2001, according to UnumProvident Corp., Chattanooga, Tenn.
UnumProvident receives about 300,000 STD claims and about 100,000 LTD claims each year.
Cancer accounted for 13% of the LTD claims UnumProvident received last year, and pregnancy complications accounted for 12%.
Other common disabling conditions included back problems, with 11% of LTD claims; cardiovascular problems, with 9%; and depression, with 5%.
On the short-term disability side, normal pregnancies accounted for 20% of claims, and pregnancy complications accounted for 9%.
Nine percent of the STD claims came from injuries other than back injuries; 8% from back problems; and 8% from digestive and intestinal problems.
