The IRS has released a reminder for taxpayers who received filing extensions for their 2023 tax returns in the wake of natural disasters. Federal income tax returns for affected taxpayers are either due by February 3 or May 1 of 2025. Impacted taxpayers are generally those who were impacted by natural disasters occurring between the spring of 2024 and the end of the year. Taxpayers in Louisiana and Vermont, all of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and parts of Arizona, Connecticut, Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New York, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas and Washington state have until Feb. 3, 2025, to file their 2023 returns. Taxpayers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, and parts of Alaska, New Mexico, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia have until May 1, 2025, to file their 2023 returns. For taxpayers in these states, May 1 will also be the deadline for filing their 2024 federal income tax returns and paying any tax due. For extension filers, however, payments on the 2023 tax year were not eligible for extra relief because those payments were due before the relevant disasters occurred.
