Jack Dolan, the longtime vice president of public affairs at the American Council of Life Insurers, retired from his post Jan. 3.

The ACLI is a Washington-based group representing companies that provide life insurance, annuities and pension plans for 90 million American families.

Dolan oversaw media relations at the group as life insurers dealt with the aftermath of the 2007-2009 financial crisis.

He was also there on Sept. 11, 2001, when life insurers did not know what the death toll of the terrorist attacks on Washington and New York would be. The list of companies heavily affected by the attacks included two insurance brokers, Aon and Marsh McLennan.

"The Washington Post called me at home the afternoon of the attack, asking if the industry would pay all claims for death benefits," Dolan recalled in an email. "I replied affirmatively, without hesitation, and was right. I knew instinctively that, despite the challenges life insurance companies would face in certifying the deaths of policyholders who perished, the companies would respond swiftly and compassionately. They did. Capitol Hill lawmakers lauded the industry, recognizing our 'policyholder and beneficiary first' approach in a dark time for our country. I swelled with pride in the industry then and still do."

Dolan was still at the ACLI in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic came to light and began killing about 1.2 million Americans, or about 1 in every 300 Americans, and life insurers faced a new wave of death claims.

Dolan has a bachelor's degree from the University of Dayton. He worked as a reporter for States News Service, as a press secretary for the late Sen. Lowell Weicker and as a writer for AARP before joining the ACLI in 1991.

He said he expects to spend time skiing, biking and paddleboarding.
