President-elect Donald Trump plans to nominate Paul Atkins as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, he announced Wednesday afternoon on Truth Social.

Atkins, CEO of Patomak Global Partners LLC in Washington, is a former SEC commissioner.

Eric Pan, president and CEO of the Investment Company Institute, applauded Atkins' nomination, stating that his "distinguished record, years of experience in the industry, and history of service at the SEC make him a supremely well qualified nominee."

Atkins, Pan added, "understands that registered fund companies play a major role in the U.S. economy. His leadership will be vital to ensuring the strength, fairness, and integrity of our financial markets. We look forward to working with him to promote the interests of registered funds and the more than 120 million investors they serve.”

Senate Banking Committee Ranking Member Tim Scott, R-S.C., added in a statement that "Our small business owners, retirement savers, and retail investors across the country deserve a leader at the Securities and Exchange Commission who will prioritize the agency’s mission over a partisan political agenda. Paul Atkins has the experience necessary to lead the agency out of Gary Gensler’s disastrous tenure and help revitalize the U.S. capital markets system — which is critical to our economic growth, job creation, and innovation."

The American Securities Association also applauded Trump's pick.

"Paul is well-versed on investor protection, capital markets, market structure, and public company issues," ASA President and CEO Chris Iacovella said Wednesday in a statement. "We look forward to working with him to rebuild the public’s trust and confidence in the agency."

SEC Chairman Gary Gensler plans to step down when Trump takes office on Jan. 20.
