America's 400 richest people added nearly $1 trillion to their fortunes over the past 12 months, bringing their collective net worth to $5.4 trillion, according to the latest Forbes 400 list of the country's wealthiest people.

Although the richest Americans' net worths have reached the highest level ever, their generosity has not increased, Forbes found in its investigation of the lifetime charitable giving of every member of the list. A third have donated less than 1% of their fortunes, earning them a Forbes philanthropy score of 1.

In contrast,10 people on the new list have given away 20% or more of their wealth, earning the highest mark, a 5.
