The rapidly evolving dynamic between employers, employees and financial planning professionals presents one of the most important competitive trends affecting the work of wealth management shops today.

In years past, employers tended to be much more “protective” of their employees and their retirement plan accounts, viewing the appropriate job of financial advisors as providing support and guidance to the retirement plan committee and helping the company protect itself from fiduciary liability.

Today, things have changed significantly, according to Sean Murray, Envestnet’s head of retirement. Now, employers of all types want to connect their people with the services of wealth management professionals — seeing the support as essential to the retirement outcomes of their workers.

On this episode of the Ask the Retirement Expert podcast, ThinkAdvisor Senior Reporter John Manganaro speaks with Murray about the convergence of wealth and retirement.

During the episode, Manganaro and Murray discuss:

  • The big opportunity for growth via retirement plan services.
  • The source and structure of advisors’ fiduciary duties.
  • The important role of technology in this marketplace and more.
