Craig Hawley to Run Nationwide's Annuity Business

Nationwide and John Hancock have named new leaders for major business units.

Nationwide has picked Craig Hawley to succeed Eric Henderson as the leader of Nationwide Annuity. Hawley will succeed Eric Henderson, who is retiring.

John Hancock brought in Hector Martinez to be head of insurance. Brooks Tingle, the former head, moved up to become John Hancock's CEO.

What it means: The teams behind clients' life insurance policies and annuity contracts are changing.

Nationwide: Nationwide's annuity business generated about $15 billion in new individual contract sales in 2023, according to LIMRA.

Hawley joined Nationwide in 2017, after it acquired Jefferson National. He was head of Nationwide Advisory Solutions. He later was senior vice president of annuity distribution at Nationwide.

In 2022, he became senior vice president of Nationwide Retirement Solutions Distribution.

He has a bachelor's degree and a law degree from the University of Louisville and serves on the Columbus Chamber of Commerce Board and the LIMRA Retirement Plans Advisory Board.

John Hancock: John Hancock, which is now owned by Manulife, generated about $4.8 billion in life insurance premium revenue in 2023 and had a 2.5% share of the market, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

Martinez previously was an individual life executive at Equitable. Before that, he spent more than a decade at Crump Life Insurance Services.

He has a bachelor's degree from Lehigh University.
