BNY Grabs Nuveen CEO as Its New Head of Wealth and Investments

Jose Minaya will join in September, taking over from Hanneke Smits, who will retire.

Nuveen CEO Jose Minaya is set to become the next head of wealth and investments at BNY, formerly BNY Mellon, in early September.

Minaya will join the company on Sept. 3, according to the firm’s announcement. He will report to Robin Vince, BNY president and CEO, and will become a member of the firm’s executive committee.

Minaya takes over the leadership role from Hanneke Smits, who will retire in September. Smits transitions to become chairwoman of BNY Investments through the end of 2024.

Minaya previously served as president and chief investment officer at Nuveen, which was acquired by TIAA in 2014. In those roles, he oversaw global operations and investment activities across equities, fixed income, real estate, private markets, natural resources, alternatives and responsible investments.

His additional experience includes investment oversight roles at AIG, Merrill Lynch and J.P. Morgan. Minaya is also on the boards of several companies and charitable organizations, including Moody’s and the Investment Company Institute.
