At the end of 2023, the U.S. banking industry comprised some 4,800 commercial banks and savings institutions, according to ADV Ratings. The 12 biggest entities held combined assets of around $17 trillion as of year-end. U.S. banks are major job providers: JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup and Wells Fargo together employ nearly one million workers in 43,470 branches across the country. Several of them — JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo and Citigroup — will report their first quarter earnings on Friday, along with asset managers BlackRock and State Street.
