Square, the payment processing platform, confirmed it was experiencing a service disruption Monday as thousands of customers logged trouble reports on social media. The problem appeared to be resolved for many relatively quickly.
"We are currently experiencing a disruption that is affecting payment acceptance. In the meantime, please use offline mode to accept payments and do not log out of your Square account as it could result in failed offline payment transactions," the Square account on X, formerly Twitter, posted at 11:20 a.m. Eastern daylight time.
"We understand how important it is for your business for our services to be up and running. Our Engineering team is actively working on a fix. Thank you for your patience as we work to resolve this issue. We'll continue to update you here and at http://IsSquareUp.com," the company said.
In an update nearly 40 minutes later, the company posted:
"We are beginning to see impacted services return to full functionality. Payments should be processing as intended. We appreciate your patience as we worked to resolve this issue. During this disruption, some order tickets may not have been sent to the KDS system. Please verify your kitchen tickets."
Some customers indicated on X that the problems at Square, which facilitates payments online and in brick-and-mortar shops across the country, extended beyond payment acceptance.
