Morningstar published the agenda for its 34th annual Morningstar Investment Conference this week, revealing the firm's decision to change its long-standing conference venue and revamp its approach to advisor networking and education.

After 17 years at Chicago's McCormick Place, the 2024 conference will be held at the city's Navy Pier on June 26 and 27. The firm will seek to deliver what it is calling a "reinvigorated experience" to attendees that fosters more networking opportunities and platforms for advisors to connect with service providers and Morningstar experts.

In announcing the updates, Kunal Kapoor, chief executive officer at Morningstar, said this year's conference will also feature a "standout agenda of the industry's most thoughtful and contrarian thinkers so advisors can keep pace with today's evolving investor." Various sessions are planned on the potential effects of of artificial intelligence on the work of advisors, while the final day of the conference will feature a keynote on the evolution of asset and wealth management.

Other agenda topics include industry consolidation, regulation, fee pressure, the evolving advisor tech stack, and the rise of exchange-traded funds, model portfolios and direct indexing.

Caroline DeCamp, senior director of experiential marketing, said that holding the conference at Navy Pier — in the summer — will allow participants an opportunity to experience "the best of Chicago along with the best of Morningstar." And, as DeCamp emphasized, conference breakout sessions will occur within the exhibit hall on dedicated stages, and the firm is debuting a new space for advisor-sponsor appointments.

Also new this year, Morningstar is offering a "hosted advisor" pass, allowing registered investment advisors to attend the conference for free. The pass aims to help advisors stay on top of industry trends and network with peers while removing the cost as a barrier for attendance, according to the firm. Hosted advisor passes are limited and include an opportunity to engage in four appointments with service providers of their choice.

Among this year's speakers are Michele Aghassi, principal and portfolio manager at AQR Capital Management; Christine Benz, director of personal finance and retirement planning at Morningstar; Ian Bremmer, president and founder of Eurasia Group; Zack Kass, former head of go-to-market at OpenAI; Michael Kitces, industry speaker and financial planner from kitces.com; and many others.
