Google knows our secret thoughts, because we often turn them into search queries. If we search for "fever," Google suspects that we might be sick. If we type "fever sy," Google suggests a list of autocomplete options that includes "fever symptoms in dogs," "fever symptoms in babies" and "fever symptoms in toddlers." Public health officials use that kind of information to find early signs of infectious disease outbreaks. The retirement planning doctors can get clues about what retirement savers are thinking about annuities now by starting an annuity-related sentence or phrase in Google, Bing or another search engine and seeing what autocomplete options the search engine proposes. For a look at 10 questions about annuities that come up in Google search queries often, based on what Google wants to put after the prompt "are annuities," see the gallery above.
