Jon Henschen, owner of independent broker-dealer and registered investment advisor recruiting firm Henschen & Associates, died July 4 after a sudden cardiac incident. He was 64.

"Jon was a close friend and business mentor who cared deeply about our industry and was never afraid to say the hard things to encourage a more fiduciary environment in financial services," Vern Coates, senior vice president of business development at Henschen & Associates, told ThinkAdvisor by email on Monday.

Henschen was a longtime contributor to ThinkAdvisor and its predecessor publication Research magazine.

"His experience, extensive writing and engaging personality will be greatly missed," Coates said, noting he "was a loving husband, father and outdoorsman who enjoyed life and made a lasting impression."

Henschen, Coates recalled, "had a unique ability to see conflicts of interest, corporate greed, and other various injustices, and to help the rest of us see it too.

"The financial services industry and those of us connected to Jon are better off today because of his influence," Coates said.

Henschen was born on July 3, 1959, in St. Louis, Missouri, but grew up in suburban Chicago and attended Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Country Messenger reported. After moving to California, he worked as a janitor and then began working as a laser optic engineer at General Optics.

Jon and Jackie Henschen, "the love of his life," were married in 1988 in California, where they lived until 1995, according to his obituary on Bradshaw Funeral Home's website. They moved to Maplewood, Minnesota, where they started their family. In 2003, the family moved to Marine on St. Croix, Minnesota.

In addition to working in the financial services sector for 18 years, he wrote more than 120 articles for financial services news sites, including ThinkAdvisor, Investment Advisor and Research magazine. He was named to Investment Advisor's IA 25 list of the most influential people in financial services in 2012 and was a LUMINARIES finalist in Thought Leadership & Education in 2022.

Henschen was preceded in death by his mother, Norma; father, Paul; and brother-in-law, Dan O'Brien (husband of his sister, Barbara).

He is survived by his wife, Jackie; daughters Hannah and Addie; siblings Barbara O'Brien, Greg, Nancy Patrick, and Doug (Anne).
