For the next week or two, any emails you send will likely be met with an automated "out of office" response, as many take off for a winter vacation. Many schools close for winter break, making it the perfect time to head to the ski slopes for a week. Or perhaps it's time to get away to warmer climates and leave behind the snow and cold temperatures. Whatever the reason, the winter holidays present a host of opportunities to meet new, wealthy friends. Whether it's snowbirds in Florida or snowshoers in Aspen, check out our gallery for 9 networking opportunities not to pass up this winter break. Making the connection is just the first step; keeping in touch afterward is also vital. My wife and I enjoy cruises. We prefer the Cunard Line. We keep a "Cunard friends" list and add another friend or couple on almost every voyage. After spending a week or two together, we explain we would like to keep in touch. People are agreeable, but then you have to follow through. A few good ways to do this include:

  • Sending photos. After the trip, e-mail some great photos. People like flattering pictures of themselves.
  • Make good on a promise. They introduced business into the conversation. You said you would send them that research report on their company, or you told them about an article in The Economist. You couldn't access it on vacation, but will send them a link later.
  • Keep in touch. My wife and I would send emails at least quarterly. We send them Christmas cards, too.
  • Invite them to stay with you. If they are in your part of the world, your guest bedroom is at their disposal.
  • Let them know when you are in town. If your travels take you to their city, give them advance notice.
  • People might do business, or they might not. It makes good sense to have friends who hold you in high regard.
