The annual Forbes 400 paints a picture of wealth in America, from the newly minted self-made to the old-money families. And it's no surprise that knowing how to invest smartly can lead to greater gains. This year's ranking of the wealthiest Americans includes 15 investors and financiers at the top of the list. Forbes noted that the country's richest people as a group are worth $4 trillion in 2022, down $500 billion from last year. The entry point for their participation in the ranking also dropped by $200 million to $2.7 billion, the first decline since the Great Depression. To compile this year's ranking, Forbes reporters examined thousands of Securities and Exchange Commission documents, court filings, probate records and news articles. When possible, they interviewed list members in person or spoke with them virtually or by phone, and also interviewed employees, financial and legal advisors, rivals and peers. Forbes calculated the 400's fortunes by using stock prices from Sept. 2. See the gallery for the 15 richest Americans in finance and investments.
