The average U.S. household pays upward of $10,000 in federal income taxes every year, but taxpayers in some states pay significantly less in state and local taxes than those in other states. WalletHub, a personal finance website, looked across the U.S. to determine which states impose the lightest tax burden on residents and which ones the heaviest. Researchers found that taxpayers in the least tax-expensive states pay three times less than those in the most expensive ones. WalletHub identified the states with the highest and lowest tax rates by comparing the 50 states and the District of Columbia across four types of taxation: real estate tax, vehicle property tax, income tax, and sales and excise tax. See the gallery for the 12 states with the lowest taxes in the country.
