Americans donated $471.4 billion to charity in 2020, a year-over-year increase of 5.1%, more than two-thirds of which was from individual donors. Forecasters expect charitable giving to continue to increase this year and next year. Much depends, however, on how generous donors feel in the coming holiday season — a significant portion of charitable donations are usually made in December. WalletHub notes in a new study that noble causes in need of support this year abound, especially given the continued devastating effects of the pandemic on many people's health and finances. But which charities will make the best use of your donations? To find out, WalletHub evaluated more than 200 of the highest-ranked U.S.-based charities based on their financial performance, transparency and popularity, according to CharityWatch and Charity Navigator. It did not consider nonprofit organizations with an obvious political affiliation or those focused primarily on a politically divisive issue. Researchers scored each organization for which ratings were available from both sources from zero to 100, with 100 being the most trustworthy with donors' money, to arrive at the final scores. See the gallery for 14 charities WalletHub identified as the best organization to donate to for each of the most popular causes. — Related on ThinkAdvisor:
