The Arlington, Virginia-based nonprofit group sponsored a consumer survey to support the Valentine's Day-linked outreach effort. An outside polling firm surveyed about 2,000 U.S. adults and asked the participants to rank life milestones in terms of importance.

Only 22% of the participants ranked marriage as a top life milestone, and marriage failed to rank among the most important five milestones.

Here are the top five milestones in terms of perceived importance, and the percentage of participants who classified those milestones as important:

  1. Financial Security: 38%
  2. Having a Successful Career: 28%
  3. Retirement: 27%
  4. Becoming Debt-Free: 26%
  5. Having Children: 26%
