Anita Fox recently took over as the director of the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services.
The Michigan department has about 350 employees, an annual insurance regulation budget of about $33 million, and about $41 million in annual insurance regulation-related revenue, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.
The department oversees credit unions, consumer finance lenders, and state-chartered banks, as well as insurers, health maintenance organizations and insurance agencies.
Fox previously was an attorney and shareholder at Fraser Trebilcock Davis & Dunlap P.C. Her list of clients has included Health Care Service Corp.'s Fort Dearborn Life; Starr Indemnity & Liability Company; Star Insurance Company; the Biomass Merchant Plants; and the Michigan Cable Telecommunications Association. She has taught insurance law at the Michigan State University law school, and she has lectured on insurance law matters for Mealy's Insurance.

From 2010 through 2012, for example, she represented Kevin Miller, a professional hockey player in Switzerland, in a suit against AXA Winterthur. Miller was trying to get AXA Winterthur to pay more of the costs related to the aftermath of a collision with another hockey player.
Fox has a bachelor's degree from Kalamazoo College and a law degree from the University of Michigan, according to her LinkedIn entry.
