(Related: Top 10 States With Most Generous Wealthy Donors) Wealthy people live in every state in the U.S., but in some states, the rich tend to be less inclined to charitable giving than in others, according to a report by Business Insider ranking of the least generous states. The average person making upward of $500,000 in the U.S. donated some $74,000, according to 2016 tax returns (the most recent date for which data are available). However, in the ranking's least generous state, the average charitable contribution in 2016 was $31,314, compared with $223,438 in the most generous one.
Every year, the IRS publishes data about the number of people who itemize their tax returns, and how many people claim which deductions by state and by income bracket. To arrive at its rankings, Business Insider focused on tax filers who itemized and made between $500,000 and $1 million and more than $1 million in the year 2016. It also looked at how many claimed the itemized deduction for charitable giving, and how much money was claimed to have been donated. Using that information, it figured out the average claimed donation per $500,000+ income tax return per state.
