The head of a big nonprofit health insurer that has been a vigorous supporter of the Affordable Care Act will succeed the outgoing head of Anthem Inc. as the next leader of America's Health Insurance Plans.

AHIP, a Washington-based group for health insurers, says Bernard Tyson, the chief executive officer of Kaiser Permanente, will be the chairman of its board in 2018.

Joseph Swedish, the chairman and president of Anthem, has been AHIP's chairman this year.

Anthem recently announced that Swedish will be stepping down from his post as Anthem's president and CEO on Nov. 20, and from his post as chairman in May.

AHIP also announced the names of nine new AHIP members.

None of the new members comes from a commercial health insurer that focuses mainly on the traditional major medical market.

Three of the new board members come from nonprofit Blue Cross and Blue Carriers, two from other nonprofit carriers, and two from companies that focus on selling Medicaid and Medicare plans.

The AHIP board will also include the presidents of CNO Financial Group Inc. and Aflac Inc.'s Aflac U.S. unit.

Marilyn Tavenner, a former administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, who signed off on many Affordable Care Act rules and regulations, will continue to be AHIP's president.

President Donald Trump's administration and Republicans in Congress are continuing to look for ways to revamp Affordable Care Act rules and programs.

"In 2018, we will continue to have a national conversation about how to improve the value of health care," Tavenner said in a statement about AHIP's new board members. "These leaders are committed to ensuring the best use of every dollar spent on coverage and care. I look forward to working with them to promote new ways to improve affordability and quality."
