Members of the Society of Actuaries have picked James Glickman to be the group's 2017-2018 president-elect.

Glickman is the president of LifeCare Assurance Company, a Woodland Hills, California-based long-term care insurance reinsurer.

Mike Lombardi, an actuarial consultant based in Vaughan, Ontario, is on track to take over as the 2017-2018 president in October, at the SOA's annual meeting in Boston.

The SOA is a Schaumburg, Illinois-based professional group for actuaries — individuals who gather and analyze statistical information related to insurance matters or other financial concerns. The SOA provides exam and certification programs that help members show they have the skills and other qualifications needed to work as actuaries.

Members of the group play a role in shaping legislation and regulations that affect everything from the inner workings of annuity contracts to efforts to reshape the Affordable Care Act.

Both Lombardi and Glickman have said in SOA campaign videos, posted on the SOA YouTube channel, that they believe the SOA needs to do its part to ease the friction that has divided the SOA from some other actuarial groups in recent years.

"The SOA can accomplish this by going back to the days before 2012, when cooperation, rather than competition, was the primary goal," Glickman said in a 2016 SOA campaign video. "Competing, by its nature, strains relationships and puts each organization, as well as its members, on the defensive."

Glickman has also said that he wants to do more to get new actuaries and retired actuaries involved in SOA activities, and to encourage SOA members to communicate with reporters.

"This process, over time, will lead to incrreased recognition that the actuarial profession is best able to provide unbiased and non-political financial analysis," Glickman said in the 2016 video.
