More Than 4,000 Expected at LPL Focus in Boston

LPL Financial will host its annual LPL Focus conference in Boston this year for financial advisors, program managers and their staffs.

The conference, which starts on Sunday and ends on Wednesday, is taking place at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. More than 3,000 advisors, program managers and staffers and more than 1,100 sponsors have registered for the conference, as of July 24.

The conference starts on Sunday with the Focus on Women event, a forum for female advisors. LPL executives, industry leaders and advisors will discuss the unique challenges and opportunities for female advisors.

Also on Sunday, the LPL Financial Foundation will host a volunteer event to benefit City Year Boston and Crossroads for Kids. LPL advisors along with employee volunteers will take part in a leadership development activity with 9th grade students from Crossroads' C5 Leadership Program to offer mentorship and support to the students as they prepare to transition into a new school year. Volunteers will also assemble school supply kits that City Year will distribute to Crossroads' campers in the Boston area.

Monday will start with a general session with Dan Arnold, LPL's president and CEO. The featured speakers on Monday include Lisa Hughes, Boston anchor and journalist, with Lori Greiner from Shark Tank. 

Then, on Tuesday, the general session will feature a panel discussion moderated by Andy Kalbaugh, managing director and divisional president of National Sales and Consulting. The panel will include subject matter experts from various business areas to discuss the future of advice – including Matt Enyedi, executive vice president of National Consulting & Marketing; Jeremy Holly, senior vice president of Strategic Business Solutions; Rob Pettman, EVP of Product & Platform Management; Brad Hearn, EVP of Business Consulting; Kirby Horan, SVP of Research; and Dimple Shah, EVP of Strategy.

The featured speaker on Tuesday is best-selling author Seth Godin, author of "The Domino Project" and "We Are All Weird."

Wednesday's general session speaker will be Burt White, and the featured speaker is Bert Jacobs, CEO of The Life is Good Co.. Jacobs and his brother launched the company with $78 in their pockets, selling T-shirts in the streets of Boston. Today, their business is a $100 million positive lifestyle brand sold by more than 2,000 retailers across the US and Canada.

The conference will also feature breakout sessions Monday through Wednesday on a variety of topics, including tax strategies, retirement planning, active and passive investing, annuities, and the Labor Department's fiduciary rule, among others.

LPL recently announced its second quarter earnings. According to LPL, it improved its profits by 53% in the second quarter to $68.4 million, or $0.74 per share, from $47.9 million, or $0.53 per share, a year earlier. Revenues, though, rose just 5% to $1.07 billion.

Its total brokerage and advisory assets stand at $542 billion, up 11% from last year. Advisory assets grew 5% from a year ago to $237 billion, or about 44% of total assets. Total hybrid-platform assets are $166.4 billion, or 31% of total assets; they grew 26% from their year-ago level.

LPL's advisors have average assets of about $38 million. Their average trailing-12-month fees & commissions were $215,000 as of June 30.
