Manulife Financial Corp. is getting a new top executive from the Pacific Rim.

The Toronto-based financial services company has named Roy Gori to be its president. Gori has been the general manager of Manulife's Asia division. He has been working out of Hong Kong.

Gori will move to Toronto to take his new position in June, Manulife said today. He will report to Donald Guloien, Manulife's CEO.

The list of Manulife executives who will report directly to Gori will include Craig Bromley, the general manager of the company's U.S. division, the company said.

The U.S. division includes the Boston-based John Hancock unit.

Gori began working for Manulife in 2015. Before that, he was head of consumer banking for North Asia and Australia at Citi.

Gori has worked in Sydney, Singapore and Thailand as well as in Hong Kong. He has an economics and finance degree from the University of New South Wales and an MBA from the University of Technology in Sydney.

Manulife ended 2016 with about 22 million customer relationships and the equivalent of $728 billion in assets under management and administration.

The John Hancock unit has a large life insurance and annuity operation. It recently discontinued new sales of individual long-term care insurance, but it still has a large number of in-force long-term care insurance policies on its books. It also runs the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program for federal employees and those employees' relatives.
