Paid family leave comes up during presidential debate

Work-life balance issues were the only benefits issues that came up during the first 2016 presidential debates Monday.

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump talked at length about the need for the United States to create more jobs during the debate, which took place in Hempstead, New York, on the campus of Hofstra University.

But the candidates never mentioned health insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, private pensions, 401(k) plans or Social Security.

Early on, when the moderator asked the candidates about how they would "put more money into the pockets of American workers," Clinton said she would like to see companies offer better profit-sharing.

Clinton went on to say, "I want us to do more to support people who are struggling to balance family and work."

"Let's have paid family leave and earned sick days," Clinton said. "Let's be sure we have affordable child care."

Clinton said she'd accomplish that by "having the wealthy pay their fair share and closing the corporate loopholes."

Trump said the solution to increasing the number of good jobs is to keep factories from moving outside the United States.

"As far as child care is concerned, and so many other things, I think Hillary and I agree on that," Trump said. "We probably disagree a little bit as to numbers and amounts."
