Jeff Bucher has a passion for wrestling, which almost took him to the 1996 summer Olympics. When he was training for the games at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, he discovered his passion for coaching and motivating others. That same passion ultimately transpired into his business, which opened in 2006. Bucher endeavors to make sure his clients are always at ease with their finances. He even sends out reassuring alerts when the market begins another volatile spurt.

The retirement market has become a specialty for Bucher. "Retirement is an incredibly special time," he says. We all think about it our entire lives — what we will do, where we will go, how we will enjoy the fruits of our labor. Through my family, I have been able to see the power of proper planning for retirement as well as the downfalls of not planning enough in advance.  It is an honor to be able to help position our clients in a way that allows them to live their dreams and enjoy the ride."

Bucher reflected on how the industry is changing with the DOL fiduciary rule, his online educational classes for clients and his no-pressure referral strategy.

On the Department of Labor's fiduciary rule: The DOL's recent regulatory changes bring new challenges, especially with limited information available. Our team already adheres to the fiduciary standard, but with some of these changes, I believe there's going to be a lot of different products and companies that may exit the market, which could ultimately make it increasingly more difficult to serve our clients in the best way possible.  However, I look at the regulatory environment and the changes as a positive because many firms may decide to go in different directions.  New advisors may exit the business because they don't have the firm established yet while older advisors may retire. The unknown aspect of the rule is what makes things a little more challenging at the current time.

On referral strategies: Our firm has seen significant growth through both educational workshops and referrals. Workshops have provided us with a great way to spread our firm's message and vision to a mass group of people at one time. Many of our workshop attendees are referrals from current clients because it provides a no-pressure way to learn more about their retirement needs and how we can help with them.

On communicating with clients during volatility: Consistent communication is key in client retention. We feel it is important to get timely information and updates to our clients as quickly as possible.  We do this through email, social media and print campaigns. The use of video is extremely important as well in bringing the message to life. As an example we used a video email to discuss the January volatility in the market. This past January was the worst January in history and I would suspect that many clients were concerned when they were watching the news. We put together a video discussing the impact it had on our portfolios and the impact it had to our clients and sent that video out via email. We also wanted to make sure they saw this video so we sent a robocall to their phone to let them know that they should check their email so they wouldn't miss it.

On ensuring financial literacy with clients: We are continually educating our clients, prospects and other community members on all aspects of retirement planning through our workshops and hold market update events for our clients twice a year. We have also developed an investor education program called Investor Squared, which provides clients and prospects an opportunity to expand their financial knowledge through an online classroom and focused topic whitepapers. We have many components to the investment and retirement process documented there that they can review and learn from at their leisure.

On his background with the Olympics:  My family and I also love sports and attending Ohio State football games. My wife and I both went to school at Ohio State and I'm a former Buckeye athlete. I was a collegiate wrestler, so that holds a very near and dear place in my heart. I am very passionate about our Olympic Training Center in Columbus at the Ohio State University. As a former aspiring Olympian myself, helping others focus on their Olympic dreams has been a blessing for me personally, as well as inspiring and motivational for us as a business. This year we placed two out of the six Olympians in wrestling for the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro, more than any other training center in the country, and both are true medal contenders; one won gold and the other bronze in the World Games last year. I was part of the development of the training center and have donated both time and money over the years and truly enjoy being part of an organization that is fully dedicated to helping athletes realize their Olympic dreams.
