The Cetera Financial Group of independent broker-dealers said Tuesday that it appointed Brett Harrison to serve as head of advisor growth. Harrison currently leads Cetera Advisors, one of 11 BDs in the RCS Capital-owned (RCAP) group.

"Our appointment of Brett Harrison to this important new senior leadership role reflects our focus on supporting the business growth of advisors throughout our network, as well as the ability of our network's member broker-dealers to recruit advisors that are a strong fit for their unique cultures," said Adam Antoniades, president of Cetera Financial Group, in a statement.

The company includes about 9,500 advisors affiliated with Cetera Advisors, Cetera Advisor Networks, Cetera Financial Institutions, Cetera Financial Specialists, First Allied Securities, Investors Capital, J.P. Turner and Co., the Legend Group, Summit Brokerage, VSR Financial Services and Girard Securities.

Harrison's main new tasks are to lead and to coordinate practice management efforts across the BD network, while working with advisors to best meet client needs and boosting advisor recruiting, according to the firm.

"I will help teams look at business-model shifts … and ensure advisors are working with our practice management experts to drive organic growth," Harrison said, in an interview. "Another aspect of my role, focused on product solutions, is to make certain we look at our asset management experts and fill the product pipeline to supplement the work of those driving asset management in the marketplace."

The executive cut his teeth in the business as a CPA. He worked at KPMG and then joined ING in 1997, where he worked on mergers and acquisitions of broker-dealers at a time when insurance firms moved into wealth management.

This work put him in contact with Larry Roth, now CEO of Cetera Financial Group.

"I have been along for the whole ride in this industry, and I have seen parts of this movie many times before. I'm excited to bring these experiences to the Cetera operations and see great opportunities ahead," Harrison said.

"While many broker-dealer groups talk about a dedicated focus on advisor growth, we believe naming the CEO of one of our network's largest broker-dealer firms to this new position exemplifies the importance we see in this function," Roth stated in a press release. "Brett will be a key player in our ongoing mission of aligning the right tools, platforms, strategies and expertise with our network's member firms and their advisors."
