About 60% of parents are supporting their children financially, a report released Tuesday by LIMRA found. Furthermore, 57% of families with adult children have at least one of those children living at home.

The kind of financial support took many forms, according to the report, from providing an allowance to paying for school. A little over a third of respondents were paying for their children's cell phone service, while about a quarter were helping with college expenses or student loan debt. Twenty-three percent were paying their kids' rent.

"Research shows that millennials have weathered the most significant repercussions from the recent economic downturn," Deb Dupont, associate managing director for the LIMRA Secure Retirement Institute, said in a statement. "While millennials are the most educated generation in history, nearly four in 10 are unemployed and many more are underemployed."

Dupont stressed that despite the challenges millennials are facing, their parents need to keep an eye on their own futures. "Parents of millennials, even those over the age of 22, are providing considerable support to their children at a time in their lives when saving from retirement should be a priority," she said.

Advisors with clients who have millennial children should make a point of talking with them about the support their giving their children, as LIMRA found they may underestimate the impact it could have on their savings.

A significant minority — 45% — of parents who gave money to their adult children in the past year said it hadn't affected their savings, Dupont said. However, she said, "We believe people are likely to underestimate the collective impact of incremental costs. Prior LIMRA Secure Retirement Institute research found that more than 50% of pre-retirees have less than $100,000 in financial assets. Even $100,000 in total savings will not be enough money to fund the 20 to 30 years these individuals are likely to face in retirement."
