There is one thing in business that has no monetary value—because it's priceless: your reputation. Whether or not you have developed an online presence, one of your most important business tasks is protecting your reputation.

These days, managing your reputation must include managing your online reputation. Just as you would protect your credit, you need to regularly check for activity connected to your name and business. People can post information about you online whether or not you have a strong social-media presence.

Ultimately, it's better to develop your own online reputation, so that, through your online posts and profiles, you can work toward positive search-engine results. One of the easiest ways to monitor your reputation is to set up a Google alert to inform you when something new appears online.

Google alerts are emailed updates of new Google occurrences of your topic of choice. If you set up a free alert with your firm's name, you will receive an email with a link to a new posting whenever anything about you appears online. If you're not sure what exists about you online, set up an alert so that you can become acquainted with your digital reputation.

Your reputation is the foundation of your business success, and your online reputation is more important than ever. So be vigilant, and defend your reputation—online and off.
