Although most advisors would agree their top priority is making sure their clients have the best experience possible, you can't forget about prospecting. If you don't continually search for the ideal clients, then how can your business survive and thrive?

Advisors looking to grow more than a "lifestyle" practice—one that will build a legacy beyond working years, need to constantly strive to grow their practice and to convert prospects into clients. The best way to do this is to focus on what you're passionate about and to connect with people who share those same passions and hobbies. This not only gives you more opportunity to do business with those who have something in common but also allows you to enjoy growing the business in a more organic fashion.

Reconnect With Fun

As adults, it can sometimes be easy to lose sight of our true interests and passions because we're caught up with our families and careers. Take a moment to rediscover your passions which may involve an activity, a hobby or a particular topic of interest.

Ask yourself:

  • If money wasn't an issue, what would I spend my time doing?

  • What makes me feel alive and energetic?
  • What is one part of my weekly routine I look forward to?

Take a few minutes and jot down your thoughts now. Is there an organization or community you're involved in or a world issue you feel strongly about? Maybe you enjoy new tools and technologies or a topic of interest you enjoyed in college? Your passions might include a sport you like to watch or play or a community service activity for which you volunteer. Your "passion list" may even include something as simple as reading books and magazines or watching movies and TV shows.

More Than You May Realize

Everyone has passions, and most people have more than they realize. Whatever those passions may be, try to think of creative ways to turn your passions and interests into passion prospecting events. Find a way to have fun with prospecting.

For example:

  • If you enjoy reading mysteries, you might consider hosting a murder-mystery dinner event.

  • If you love the great outdoors, consider hosting an event with a speaker from the National Park Services or the Sierra Club.
  • If your passion is fitness, consider hosting a private workout session at a local gym with a personal trainer or a yoga session with an expert instructor.

Whatever it may be, hosting events that incorporate your passions and interests will set you apart and get the attention from your prospects. Plus, the prospecting process will seem more fun than tedious, and when you find others who share your passions and hobbies, you will more  easily convert those prospects into clients.
