State-based exchanges seem to be getting fewer consumers to select private plans this month than in December but more than in November.

Colorado, Connecticut and Maryland are some of states that have put out enough numbers for exchange watchers to calculate weekly or biweekly "qualified health plan" plan selection totals for January.

Another state-based exchange, Covered California, has reported plan selection information for about 63,000 people per week during the first two weeks of January. That's down from an average of 100,000 per week in December, but up from an average of about 19,000 per week in November.

In Colorado, Connect for Health Colorado sold QHPs to 10,624 people, or about 5,300 per week, from Jan. 1 through Jan. 15. The average is down from average QHP enrollment of about 10,200 per week in December, but up from an average of about 1,600 per week in November.

The Colorado exchange had enrolled 1,055 workers and dependents in 101 Small Business Health Options Program small-group plans as of Dec. 31.

Most QHP buyers are choosing bronze or silver plans. Thirteen percent have bought gold level coverage.

In Connecticut, Access Health CT received individual QHP selection information for 3,189 people for the week that ended Jan. 12.

That compares with an average of about 6,500 per week in December and an average of about 2,000 people per week in November.

The Connecticut exchange staff noted in a board meeting packet that the exchange has tried to ease stress on its call centers by improving training for brokers and nonprofit assisters and by adding a technical support line aimed at brokers and assisters.

In Maryland, the Maryland Health Connection received QHP selection information for 2,154 people for the week ending Jan. 11. Maryland was averaging about 4,000 QHP selections per week in December and about 600 per week in November.

The Maryland exchange says it has trained about 2,000 exchange agents and is sending them weekly exchange program updates.
