LIMRA is launching a training program to help advisors use social media effectively, the association of financial services and insurance firms announced on Thursday.

LIMRA will collaborate with Erik Qualman, a social media expert and the author of several books, for the four-part program.

"Now is the perfect time to offer this course," James Kerley, president, LIMRA Services, said in a statement. "LIMRA research shows that 90% of financial services companies are using some form of social media. The next step is how to best maximize social media for business while, at the same time, meeting compliance standards."

The program will be offered online, and advisors can complete each 30-minute segment at their own pace, according to LIMRA. It will cover topics like growing social networks, prospecting through social media and improving professional relationships online.

Qualman will lead three of the sessions with an emphasis on marketing. The final session will focus on compliance. LIMRA said the compliance section can be used for FINRA firm element requirements and can be customized for each company's specific policies and procedures.

The course will be available beginning in September.
