Why pension funds are eating your 401(k)'s lunch

In many ways, pensions rule the school. Pensions have a bigger pool, thus better returns than the loner 401(k)s; pension fund managers do all of the work for you; companies typically cover pension fees, whereas participants usually pay their 401(k). Should employers encourage workers to choose a 401(k) knowing it might not provide the best retirement income stream?
