The mysterious disease on the rise in the Southwest may remain a mystery because it is not getting attention or research money despite a 900 percent increase in cases from 1998-2011. The fungal infection that disproportionately affects those that work outside is often misdiagnosed because so little is known about it. With infections numbering 150,000 nationwide each year, perhaps it is time to give this mystery disease more attention.
