To really understand an organization, you need to understand it on three levels. The first level is the Artifacts we can see and experience directly about the organization. The second level is the Espoused Values of the organization; what the organization says it stands for. The third level is Basic or Unspoken Assumptions; the habits of the organization and how its people automatically behave. When all three are in sync, what results is a deeply powerful corporate culture. And when they don't? That's when the real problems start to emerge, the kind that superficial fixes can never truly address.
