NHCAA elects board chair

The National Health Care Anti-Fraud Association (NHCAA) elected Alanna M. Lavelle, AHFI, MS, CPC, director of Special Investigations of WellPoint, Inc., as the new chair of the board of directors.

Lavelle succeeds Jack Price, former Chief Security Officer of BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee. 

Lavelle joined WellPoint in 2004, after serving 25 years with the Federal Bureau of Investigation where she managed a large health care fraud task force and served as the supervisory special agent FBI liaison for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), working closely with the CDC on bioterrorism matters in the post 9/11 era. Currently she manages the Special Investigative Unit for the Southeast and Central Regions of WellPoint, Inc., representing 13 million covered lives in Georgia, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, Wisconsin and Virginia.

In other industry news:

The board of directors for Guardian Life Insurance Company of America (Guardian) approved payment of $805 million in dividends to the company's individual life policyholders in 2013. The allocation is the largest-ever distribution to Guardian's participating policyholders.

In addition, the Dividend Interest Rate, which is the investment component of the dividend, will be 6.65 percent in 2013.

The Guardian Insurance & Annuity Company, Inc. (GIAC) upgraded and redesigned its annuity customer website My Annuity Manager. The new site replaces the My Account Manager site.

The improvements include easier access to:

  • Annuity contract information;
  • Personal info;
  • Transaction history;
  • Systematic withdrawal details;
  • Annuity payment details;
  • Printable forms, statements and tax documents.

GIAC also made enhancements to its investment option line-up for plan sponsors who utilize The Guardian Advantage or The Guardian Choice as the funding vehicle for their qualified retirement plans.

The Guardian Advantagefund line-up will expand by 27 new investment options for a total of 101 investment options. The Guardian Choicefund line-up will add 33 options for a total of 111. The investment options provide exposure to new market sectors and are managed by some of the largest and well-recognized investment managers in the industry. 

Plan sponsors now have the option of selecting investments from several new asset classes and mutual fund families and will include both actively managed and index-based funds. The enhanced asset class lineup includes Large Cap Blend, Large Cap Growth, Multi Sector Bond, Emerging Markets Bond, Target Date, Index, Socially Responsible and Sector funds.

TechLeaders created an advisory board of financial industry executives to enhance dialogue between technology providers and users for the 2013 annual broker-dealer technology conference.

The board will play an influential role in developing the conference panels, seminars and awards, ensuring that the broker-dealer industry's latest developments, trends, and achievements in technology are showcased. 

The board is composed of six C-level executives from broker-dealers, securities firms and financial services providers:

  • Robert Kirk, chief information officer, 1st Global
  • Doreen Griffiths, executive vice president and chief information officer, Securities America
  • John Bowers, vice president, Waddell & Reed
  • Wade Wilkinson, president and chief executive officer, Securities Service Network, Inc.
  • Mike Bewley, COO, Kovack Securities
  • Gabriel Cooper, senior technology liaison, Cambridge Investment Research, Inc.

The 2013 TechLeaders Conference will be held on March 13-15, 2013 in Irving, Texas.

William T. Lawrence has returned to the MGIS Companies, Inc. (MGIS), a provider of insurance products and services specifically for physicians, as director of Underwriting.

Lawrence has 26 years of experience in professional Group and Individual Disability and Life insurance, much of it working in the physician group marketplace. His background includes underwriting, service, sales, contract development and consulting. Prior to returning to MGIS, he was an independent broker, focusing on attorney and physician groups. He has also been a national business consultant specializing in physician group disability and life insurance development, marketing and sales for some of the largest disability insurance carriers.

After serving 12 years as a U.S. Air Force officer, Lawrence began his insurance career in 1986 at Unum where he served in both local and regional service management positions in the Unum Western region. In 1993, he opened Unum's Salt Lake City group sales office. From 1997 to 2005, Lawrence held the position of MGIS national product marketing director, which included managing renewal underwriting strategies, developing contracts and providing marketing and competition comparison materials.

Lawrence holds a BA from the University of California, Berkeley (1974) and a MBA from Nova University in Florida (1986). He is a licensed insurance producer in numerous states and has authored and conducted continuing education courses focusing on physician Long Term Disability.

Charles SantosThe Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company appointed Charles Santos, CLU, to regional marketing director for Penn Mutual's Pacific region, which encompasses the states of California and Hawaii.

Prior to joining Penn Mutual, Santos was the field vice president at Pacific Life for five years. During that time, he was mainly responsible for recruiting producers and managing sales. He holds his CLU designation and his FINRA Series 6 and 63 licenses. In addition, he is an active member of the local Estate Planning Council.

Santos holds his bachelor's degree in social science from University of California, Irvine.

Nielsen Benefits Group (NBG) merged with Digital Insurance. NBG now operates under the banner of Digital Benefit Advisors (DBA), a division of Digital Insurance. President and CEO Craig Nielsen and his entire staff are joining forces with DBA to provide enhanced offerings and support to their clients.

Established in 1986 as a full-service employee benefits firm, NBG has worked with many businesses throughout California in several industries, including professional services firms, manufacturing and agriculture.
