A research team at the University of Western Ontario has used a combination of an fMRI scanner and cleverly designed questions to get meaningful responses from Scott Routley, a man who has seemed to be in an unresponsive vegetative state for 12 years. The researchers are hoping they can use the scanning system to distinguish nonresponsive but conscious patients from those who are simply locked in.
