FPA Announces Award Winners

The Financial Planning Association (FPA) announced the winners of its top awards, to be presented at FPA Experience 2012, Friday through Tuesday in San Antonio.

David King will be honored with a posthumous presentation of the 2012 P. Kemp Fain Jr. Award for his visionary devotion to the development of the financial planning movement as an established profession. He was the first chairman of the International Board of Standards and Practices for Certified Financial Planners (now CFP Board) and chaired the board of regents of the College for Financial Planning.

Wade Pfau will be the first recipient of the 2011 Montgomery-Warschauer Award, given by the editors of the Journal of Financial Planning to honor the paper that provided the most outstanding contribution for the betterment of the Journal's readership in the preceding year. Since 2010, Pfau has published multiple articles in the Journal, and will be recognized for a paper published in May 2011.

The Heart of Financial Planning Award recognizes individual professionals, financial planning firms, FPA chapters or organizations who engage in extraordinary work, contributing and giving back to the financial planning community and public through financial planning. Ten recipients will be honored with this award at the conference.

Awardees are Jon Beyrer, FPA of San Diego; Reed Fraasa, FPA of New Jersey; Omega Hartman, FPA of New Jersey; Anja Luesink, FPA of New York; Ruth Lytton, FPA of Central Virginia; Kathy Muldoon, FPA of Dallas/Fort Worth; John (Dick) Power, FPA of Massachusetts; Neal Solomon, FPA of Northeastern New York; Richard Vodra, FPA of the National Capital Area; and David Yeske, FPA of San Francisco.

Beyrer has been a key person in the development of FPA San Diego's two student chapters, as well as the chapter's Pro Bono programs for military service members, domestic violence victims and the homeless. In 2011 he helped found The Professional Alliance for Children. He is a partner and vice president for Wealth Management at Blankinship & Foster in Solana Beach, Calif.

Fraasa was instrumental in establishing financial literacy as a chapter goal and developed relationships and project participation with local legislators and organizations supporting financial literacy. He is a past chairman of Alliance Forum and past chairman of the Chapters Leaders Advisory Council, and continues to volunteer by conducting seminars and leading meetings on management and organization techniques that enhance FPA chapter operations. Fraasa is president of Highland Financial Advisors.

Hartman has led school projects, military programs and Newark/Elizabeth Financial Planning Days. Her ability to conceptualize and implement financial literacy programs has helped her chapter be recognized as a leader in financial literacy throughout the state. She serves on FPA's national Pro Bono Advisory Council, is an ongoing mentor to future chapter leaders and has provided tools to FPA committees allowing them to be more effective in their efforts. Hartman is the founder and principal of Omega Financial Management.

Luesink has been instrumental in FPA of New York committees since 2005, and chaired the Pro Bono program for 2 years. As pro bono director, she has been leading a team of 60 volunteers who provide financial literary and financial counseling to selective low-income groups in New York City. She is a member of the FPA Pro Bono Advisory Committee and the FPA Community Advisory Council at the national level, and was an instructor of retirement planning at New York's University's Certificate of Financial Planning Program. She is the president of Luesink Financial Planning.

Lytton works with the Financial Planning Program at Virginia Tech, serves as the University's director for its Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards registered program and has coauthored two financial planning textbooks. An academic member of FPA, she serves as faculty adviser to the FPA of Virginia Tech. She has served several volunteer roles for the FPA, including current service on the FPA Academic Advisory Council and accompanying Student Volunteers to the national conference for 12 years.

Muldoon mentors fellow professionals and students to help them acquire and hone the necessary skills to achieve career goals. She has been with Carter Financial Management since 1979 and currently serves in the role of senior vice president. She also serves on several not-for-profit boards in leadership positions and chairs two investment committees.

Power is a retired Army colonel and has spent the past 10 years assisting men and women serving in the U.S. military in Massachusetts. Through his leadership, FPA of Massachusetts developed the pro bono FPAMA Military Initiative, which trains volunteers to provide financial coaching, including assistance with tax returns, to military members and their families. Power was also instrumental in organizing the FPA nationwide program supporting Homes for Our Troops, which raises funds and builds homes that are designed specifically for severely wounded veterans.

Solomon was the key organizer of a 2008 FPA/People to People trip that brought American FPA member financial planning professionals to Russia. He has worked in government relations and regulatory areas, having served as chairman of several FPA committees and on FPA task forces focusing on regulation and fiduciary standards. He is currently the managing director and CCO at WealthPro, is a shareholder and serves on the board of eirectors of SFA Holdings, the parent company of The Strategic Financial Alliance, and is the chief financial officer at Hearing Care Resources. Vodra is a founding member of the Nazrudin Project, and his work over the years has led to developments linking behavioral finance to the practice of financial planning. Additionally, he was the first person to present at FPA Retreat regarding the implications of the world's finite energy resources and is an authority on financial planning implications of peak oil and global climate change. After a long career with Spire Investment Partners, Vodra founded Worldview Two Planning to help clients and other professionals better understand how peak oil, climate change and related resource issues impact financial plans.

Yeske has taught almost every course offered in the financial planning program at Golden Gate University (GGU), where he is a distinguished adjunct professor in its school of business.He created GGU's "Practicum in Financial Planning," an opportunity for students to work with real clients creating functional financial plans. He currently chairs FPA's Academic Advisory Council, and served as the organization's national president in 2003. Yeske is currently the managing director at Yeske Buie.
