It may be easy to blame baby boomers for their profligate spending ways that have left their savings accounts barren. But some of the reasons they have been unable to save are beyond their control. Real median income for boomers has been on a downward slide since the 1990s, and health-care costs have risen. Both limit what they can save. However, they are probably spending too much to support their adult children and have overpaid for their homes.
