BALTIMORE (AP) — Maryland has received a $123 million federal grant to support development of the state's health benefit exchange.

Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown made the announcement Thursday in Baltimore.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (PPACA) requires Maryland to have its exchange operational by October 2013.The grant is to be used to continue the development and implementation of the state-based health insurance exchange.

The exchange is supposed to be a marketplace that people and small businesses can use to shop for private health insurance and determine whether they are eligible for Medicaid or for federal tax credits.

Brown also announced that Maryland will call its exchange the Maryland Health Connection.
