Wendy C. Waugaman, former CEO and president of American Equity Investment Life Holding Company, passed away Monday after a battle with cancer, the company said.

Waugaman joined American Equity in 1999 as CFO and general counsel, and became CEO in 2009. She also served on the firm's board of directors.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of our respected colleague and friend. Wendy was dedicated to the success of American Equity and an industry leader in the fixed index annuity business," said David J. Noble, executive chairman. "On behalf of everyone at American Equity, we offer our condolences to her family, and our thoughts and sympathies are with them at this difficult time."

American Equity announced Waugaman, 51, had taken a medical leave of absence June 8, and that John M. Matovina, chief financial officer, would serve as interim CEO and president during her absence.
