Sterne Agee, a privately owned investment banking and brokerage firm in Birmingham, Ala., opened a wealth and estate management group last week.

Sterne Agee said in a statement that the new group will take a multigenerational approach to family governance, wealth transfer strategies, investment management, risk management, philanthropy and financial management.

"Our group offers the client a single point of contact for wealth and estate management which is particularly helpful in coordinating complex wealth transfer strategies," Hanson Slaughter, the group's executive managing director, said in the statement. "The efficiencies gained in the coordinated effort allow our clients full access to the full breadth and depth of our platform."

Ann Haas and Barry McRae, both managing directors, round out the leadership of the group, which has more than 60 years of combined financial services and family office experience.

"The Wealth and Estate Management Group allows our firm to better serve clients whose needs go beyond traditional brokerage services," said Jim Holbrook, chairman and CEO of Sterne Agee Group.

Sterne Agee has been serving clients since 1901 and manages more than $17 billion for some 140,000 clients across the country.
