Just over half the states in the U.S. have a filial responsibility law that requires spouses, children and parents of needy adults support the indigent. John Pitta's mother entered a rehabilitation home before she later moved out of the country. The mom's Medicaid application did not get approved fast enough for the nursing home, and sued Pitta for the bill. Pitta's tax returns, bank statements and other personal data are no presumably public record. To prevent getting caught in the filial law, begin the Medicaid application process as soon as all of the qualifications have been met and purchase long term care insurance.
