Highmark Reports Higher Revenue

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Highmark Inc. came out of 2011 with mixed results.

Highmark, Pittsburgh, is reporting $445 million in net income for the year on $14.8 billion in revenue, compared with $462 million in net income on $14.6 billion in revenue for 2010.

The nonprofit carrier provides or administers major medical coverage for 4.9 million people in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Delaware.

Highmark says it is proceeding with a proposed takeover of the West Penn Allegheny Health System, a major hospital.

Highmark's board fired the former chief executive officer, Kenneth Melani, Sunday. Melani was charged with assault he got into a fight with the husband of a Highmark employee with whom he was having an affair, according to police reports.
