New Hire Roundup: Hedge Fund Association Announces Officers; Carlyle Names Board

This week in new hires, the Hedge Fund Association announced its newly elected officers; the Carlyle Group announced new board members; Altegris welcomed Amy Bennett; and Sanjay Puri joined Zephyr Associates.

Also, Beirne Wealth Consulting welcomed Phil Sloane and Jeff Vivacqua moved up at Cambridge.

Ackles, Geffner Elected at Hedge Fund Association

The Hedge Fund Association, a nonprofit organization that promotes the understanding and development of the alternative investments industry, announced Monday that Mitch Ackles, a public relations executive specializing in the hedge fund industry, has been elected as its president. Ron S. Geffner, a law partner at Sadis & Goldberg LLP and an expert in regulations affecting hedge funds, was elected to his second term as vice president, and former president David Friedland was named chairman.

Ackles is the founder and CEO of Hedge Fund PR. His firm represents hedge funds, service providers, investors, conference organizers, and local, national and global hedge fund groups. He also serves as spokesman for Hedge Funds Care, a global charitable organization which raises funds for programs that work to prevent and treat child abuse. Prior to his election, Ackles also served on the HFA's board of directors and served as its spokesman for three years.

Geffner oversees Sadis & Goldberg's Financial Services Group, where he advises private investment vehicles, investment advisory organizations, broker-dealers, commodity pool operators and other investment fiduciaries. He also counsels clients on regulatory issues and is a frequent commentator on the hedge fund industry.

Carlyle Group Names New Board Members

Jay Fishman, chairman of Travelers, and former Marriott International executive William Shaw have been named to the Carlyle Group's board of directors prior to its forthcoming IPO. Other appointments include Janet Hill, a principal with Hill Family Advisors in Fairfax and mother of professional basketball star Grant Hill; former Goldman Sachs partner Lawton Fitts; Thomas Robertson, dean of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania; and James Hance, a former executive at Bank of America.

In addition, Edward Mathias, a managing director at Carlyle, and its three co-founders Daniel A. D'Aniello, William E. Conway Jr. and David M. Rubenstein will also join the board.

Amy Bennett Joins Altegris as Director of Sales Strategy and Channel Marketing

Altegris announced Tuesday that Amy Bennett has been named director of sales strategy and channel marketing. In this role, she will report directly to Andrea Trachtenberg, chief marketing officer, and lead the development and implementation of comprehensive multichannel sales and marketing strategies.

Prior to joining Altegris, Bennett served as the program marketing director at Guggenheim Investments (formerly Rydex/SGI). She also served as vice president and strategic product manager at Black Rock Inc.(formerly Barclays Global Investors).

Zephyr Associates Adds Sanjay Puri as Senior Sales Executive

Zephyr Associates, Inc. announced recently that Sanjay Puri has joined the firm as a senior sales executive in its London office. He will work with the London branch's consulting team to retain and grow Zephyr's existing client base and to drive new business throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia. He will also be responsible for contributing to Zephyr's marketing and sales strategy in those markets.

Puri most recently served as an account manager at Data Explorers, where his duties included maintaining existing revenue for traditional securities lending clients, hedge funds and institutional investment companies and overseeing new business sales to London-based hedge funds and other clients in the Netherlands and South Africa. Previously he was a buy side account manager at StarMine, a Thomson Reuters subsidiary providing web platforms and data feeds with equity analytics to the global buy side community, and held several positions at Bloomberg.

Beirne Wealth Consulting Adds Senior Institutional Consultant Phil Sloan

Beirne Wealth Consulting, LLC announced the addition of Phil Sloan as a senior institutional consultant. He will serve on the firm's investment committee and serve as a member of the team advising the firm's institutional clients.

Prior to joining, he was a managing director at Fox Asset Management where he developed relationships with major institutional consultants and brokerage firms and served as an active member of the management and strategy committees. He has also led institutional consulting organizations and served as the vice president of institutional sales for MBIA, the vice president of managed accounts at Paine Webber, and a vice president at Merrill Lynch.

Cambridge Names Jeff Vivacqua as First Vice President of Business Strategy

Cambridge Investment Research, Inc. announced recently that Jeff Vivacqua has been promoted to first vice president, business strategy and will serve on Cambridge's executive committee.

He joined Cambridge in 2010, bringing over 15 years of experience in the financial services industry. His prior experience includes serving as a vice president with Mutual Service Corporation, an LPL affiliate, and AIG Advisor Group.
