When middle-age clients express concerns about what will happen to elderly parents, do you ever ask a basic question?
One I often ask is, "Do you want to become a caregiver?"
To understand why the question is important, you have to under that 44 million people in the United States — about 19% of the adult population — provide unpaid care to a person age 50 or older.
One survey found that caregivers make significant sacrifices such as cutting back on leisurely activities (49%), spending less personal vacation time (47%), and reducing personal savings (38%).
Anticipating whether one will assume caregiver responsibilities oneself can be a useful step toward understanding the importance of long-term care insurance (LTCI) and hybrid insurance/annuity programs with long-term care (LTC) riders or benefits.
