Acres of Diamonds

It's amazing what you can find in your own backyard — if you will only look. I remember reading a speech called "Acres of Diamonds" by Russell Conwell. He spoke of not looking elsewhere for opportunity, achievement or fortune because the resources to achieve all good things are present in one's own community.

Conwell introduced his theme with a story about a man who wanted to find diamonds so badly he sold his property and went off to distant lands in search for them. The new owner of his home discovered that a rich diamond mine was located right there on the property. This begs the question — what's in your own backyard?

Many in the financial services business want to find "acres of diamonds" — whether it be the perfect prospecting tool or an endless supply of referrals. If we only take the time to look in our own community and take advantage of all the resources available to us, we will be equipped for success.

Don't know where to start? Here are some first steps to getting involved in your community. You never know who you will meet through your involvement!

  • Be a resource for your local civic organization: Civic organizations are always in need of help. They especially need guest presenters that are willing to speak at their weekly meetings. Offer to host a financial-related seminar focused on a topic that speaks to the group.
  • Put your name on a jersey: Sponsor a local youth athletic team through your community's recreation department. You're helping kids in the community and parents will notice.
  • Family-centric events: Organize an event (or a series of events) at your local library, school group or chamber of commerce that focuses on family, finances and fun. Have a child nutritionist or child safety expert offer educational activities for children and parents. Get creative!

The possibilities can be endless. You will not only be seen as a community leader, but also will be meeting more and more people who may be looking for financial help in the future.

So don't wait, start "digging" in your own backyard today!
